The Colne Grand Prix relies on volunteers to make it happen:
- The Orgnaising team – CDPP and Colne Town Council
- Marshals – to keep everything safe. These are locals, not all with a cycling background
- Race officials (commissaires) – appointed by British Cycling, supported by local volunteers.
Volunteers come from local cycling clubs and cycling related groups, local people unrelated to clubs, local businesses and more.
In fact we welcome anyone interested in helping out to volunteer their time, especially if from Colne and Pendle

British Cycling Volunteers
British Cycling have schemes for volunteers related to cycling. These fall into a number of categories:
- Commissaire and event officials – the referees of cycling at regional, national and international (UCI) level. Commissaires are specific to each cycling discipline.
- Cycling Coach – from coaches at local clubs to coaches of the Olympic squad and international teams. Involves training and accreditation following Sport England accredited programmes
- Rider Leaders – able to lead groups of riders. Involves separate training and accreditation for both road and off-road.
- Accredited Marshals – officially stop traffic at road junctions for road racing, training and accreditation required
- Motorcycle Marshals – help keep road racing safe, often ex-police and advanced motorcyclists, involves training.
- Event Organisers – tend to be already involved with cycling
- Off-Road Marshals – help with the safety of off-road events
- Regional Volunteers – tend to get involved with the British Cycling regional structure, representing clubs and groups shaping what goes on
- General Volunteers – help run local cycling clubs and groups, help with events such as judging and marshaling, and many other jobs.
Volunteers are not paid, there might be food and drink provided depending on the event and activity. For some roles expenses are paid to the volunteers.
Cycling Award for Young Volunteers
The British Cycling Young Volunteer scheme is for 16+ age groups who are interested in coaching, race official roles and club organisational roles.
The focus is on the early stages of each aspect of volunteering, assisting at events and clubs, at the same time working towards accreditation. It is a very social programme with forums and specific awards.
Many carry on as they get older into significant roles.
